If you would rather speak to a professional, our experts are always ready and willing to assist.

How to buy an engagement ring

At Diamonds by Rothschild, we pride ourselves in the level of education we give our clients. We want to ensure that every client that enters our Clark Building Showroom are making the decision that best suite their taste and circumstances.

In line with this commitment, we have put together a little guide to assist you in the extremely important decision-making process of selecting an engagement ring.

Step 1

Decide on the diamond quality by considering the 4C’s of diamonds

The diamond is the showpiece upon which the rest of the ring is built.

Below is a summary of the basic elements we discuss with our clients during our consultations.

We also have a more in-depth discussion of the 4 C’s of diamonds that determine their characteristics.

Diamond Icon

Diamond Carats

Diamond carat is essentially the weight of the diamond.

One carat equals 0.2 grams or 200 milligrams. A higher carat diamond is usually more valuable

Diamond Icon

Diamond Color

The color of a diamond refers to how much color the diamond lets through.

A colorless diamond will let through more light and be more valuable.

Diamond Icon

Diamond Clarity

Diamond clarity indicates the number of flaws a diamond has.

Flaws are inclusions (naturally occurring) or blemishes (incurred at the time of cutting).

Diamond Icon

Diamond Cut

Generally confused with the shape, diamond cut refers to the reflective qualities of the diamond.

Good finishes and angles in a cut provide brilliance to the diamond.

Step 2

Consider engagement ring styles and/or setting

Ring styles refer to the overall design or aesthetic of the engagement ring. It encompasses the visual appearance, shape, and overall theme of the ring.

Ring settings refer to how the diamond or gemstone is secured onto the ring. It involves the method and style of attaching the stone to the band.

Together, they form the overall design of the ring.

All Diamond Engagement Ring Settings and Styles are available at Diamonds by Rothschild in Pittsburgh

Celine - Halo Setting Engagement Ring

Halo Engagement Ring

Large stone with smaller stones stones encircling it. It lends additional emphasis and sparkle to the center stone and makes it appear bigger.

Harper - Solitaire Engagement Ring

Solitaire Engagement Ring

This setting has only one large stone in the middle of the band.

Diane - Three Stone Engagement Ring.webp__PID:53765a12-2047-4a46-ada6-a5b277890974

Three Stone Engagement Ring

Usually a larger stone in the middle with two smaller stones on the sides. It traditionally represented the present, future, and past of the couple, with the largest presenting the present.

Kendall - Hidden Halo Engagement Ring - Side View

Hidden Halo Engagement Ring

This setting differs from the halo in the sense that the smaller stones that encircles it, is set below the large stone. It is therefore more visible from the side than the top view.

Rachel - Pave Engagement Ring Setting.

Pavè Engagement Ring

Pavè is French for paved, so smaller stones are set along the shank of the band in a manner that resembles cobble stones. It gives the appearance of a solid diamond surface because the diamonds are set so closely together.

Katherine - Side Stone Engagement RIng.

Side Stone Engagement Ring

Variation of the three stone setting, but can be expanded to include a five-stone ring.

Prong Setting Engagement Ring

Metal claws (prongs) hold the stone in place, allowing more light exposure.

Ava - Split Shank Engagement Ring - Side View

Split-Shank Engagement Ring

The band splits into two as it reaches the center stone. This design can add visual interest and a sense of uniqueness to the ring.

Step 3

Determine the diamond cut shape

The diamond shape is commonly referred to as the diamond cut but is not to be confused with the cut discussed under the 4C’s of Diamonds.

Some of the most popular diamond shapes are:

Emerald Cut Shape Diamond Ring

There are also other, less popular diamond cut shapes such as the Baguette, Trilliant, Principle, Old European, Briolette, Trapezoid and also hybrid diamond cut shapes such as the Radiant-Cut Modified Brilliant

step 4

Choose the metal to be used for your ring

Although cost might play a role in deciding the metal you would like to use, this decision is mainly influenced by personal preference and style.

Rings in different precious metals

White Gold

White gold is an alloy of gold mixed with white metals such as nickel, palladium, or silver. It is then plated with rhodium to enhance its whiteness.

It has a sleek and contemporary look, and pairs well with various gemstones, complementing different styles of settings and designs. It is generally more affordable than platinum, providing a white metal option at a lower price point.

Yellow Gold

It is pure gold mixed with alloy metals like copper and zinc.

It is a classic choice with a timeless appeal, making it suitable for traditional and vintage-inspired designs.

Yellow gold has been a traditional choice for engagement rings for centuries, adding a sense of history and heritage.

Rose Gold

Gold alloyed with copper, giving it a rosy or pinkish hue.

It has a romantic and feminine appearance. Less common than white or yellow gold, rose gold offers a unique and distinctive look.

The warm tones of rose gold can complement various gemstones and add a touch of warmth to the overall design.

Platinum

Platinum is a naturally white metal that is used in jewelry.

It is exceptionally durable and resistant to tarnish, making it a great choice for those who lead active lifestyles.

It is hypoallergenic and suitable for individuals with metal sensitivities.

Unlike white gold, platinum does not require rhodium plating and maintains its natural white color over time.

Step 5

How to measure ring size

In the United States, ring sizes are typically measured using the numerical scale.

The standard US ring size chart ranges from size 3 to size 13.5, with each whole and half-size representing a specific circumference or diameter of the finger.

To measure your ring size, you can purchase a ring sizer. You could also measure by using a string, paper or existing ring that fits the intended finger well.

Tips for accurate ring measurement

  • Measure your finger at room temperature; fingers can swell in heat.
  • Measure your finger at the end of the day when it's typically the largest.
  • Consider the width of the band; wider bands generally require a larger size.
  • Ring sizes can vary between countries, so make sure you're using the correct measurement system (US, UK, European, etc.).
  • Some fingers on the dominant hand may be slightly larger, so measure the specific finger you plan to wear the ring on.

For the most accurate measurement however, we advise you visit us for a professional measurement.

Engagement Ring Testimonial from John.

John

I purchased a custom designed eternity ring that thrilled my wife.

They employ a unique software that takes an idea and brings it to life. They softened the edges, set the diamonds close to the core which created a very comfortable beautiful fit for my wife.

They were very accommodating and no 'heavy' sales approach.

It is our new home for any jewelry going forward.
